La Paulownia tomentosa è un albero a foglia caduca, di medie dimensioni, a crescita velocissima, raggiunge i 12-15 metri di altezza, con chioma molto spansa. Grandi foglie ovate, appuntite, non lobate o con 3-5 lobi poco profondi. Le foglie sono ricoperte da una leggera peluria sulla pagina superiore, da una fitta peluria grigia e vellutata sotto. Ad aprile-maggio vistosa e abbondante fioritura di grandi fiori tubulosi di color lilla-viola, profumati, raggruppati in grandi pannocchie erette. I frutti, simili a noci, sono capsule, grandi 5 cm, dapprima verdi poi marroni, che perdurano sulla pianta per tutto l’inverno.
